How to Choose a Leather AirTag Holder

How to Choose a Leather AirTag Holder

An Apple AirTag is a small, smooth disc with no hole, loop or clip. To put one on your keys, bag or luggage, it needs a holder. Leather is one of the best materials for the job: it protects the AirTag from scratches, it feels good in the hand, and it gets better looking with use.

We make leather AirTag holders by hand in our Toronto studio. Here is what we would look for if we were buying one.

1. A snug fit

The AirTag should sit firmly inside without rattling. A holder that is cut and stitched to the AirTag's size keeps it from slipping out when your keys get tossed in a bag.

2. A closure you can open

An AirTag runs on a standard CR2032 coin battery that you replace yourself, and Apple says it lasts about a year. So you will need to take the AirTag out now and then. A snap closure keeps it secure and still lets you open the holder in a second.

3. Stitching that lasts

The edge of a holder takes the most wear. Hand stitching uses two needles on one thread, so if one stitch ever wears through, the rest of the seam still holds. Look closely at product photos: the stitches should be even and tight.

4. Solid hardware

The ring or clasp carries the weight of your keys. A swivel clasp is handy if you move the holder between a bag, a backpack and luggage. A simple ring is slimmer for keys.

5. Leather quality

Thicker, firmer leather holds its shape and protects the AirTag better than thin, floppy material. Vegetable-tanned leather is a favourite of ours because it darkens and softens beautifully over time.

6. A shape you like

Most holders are plain circles, and there is nothing wrong with that. But a holder is something you look at every day, so it can have some personality. Ours come in round, star, heart and animal shapes.

Does leather block the AirTag?

No. The AirTag's signal passes through leather, so Find My keeps working, and you can still hear it play a sound.
